Maintenance Superintendent Engineering and Planning

JOB SUMMARY

The Maintenance Superintendent Engineering and Planning is responsible for leading and managing the engineering and planning functions within the Maintenance Department. This role provides leadership, technical expertise, and strategic direction to the engineering and planning teams, focusing on asset management, maintenance planning, engineering projects, and long-term reliability and improvement initiatives. This role ensures compliance with company standards and drives continuous improvement in asset reliability and maintenance effectiveness, while the Maintenance Superintendent oversees the execution of maintenance activities.

MAIN DUTIES

  • Strategically oversee the development and application of reliability analytics methodologies, including RCA (Root Cause Analysis) and FMECA (Failure Mode Effect Criticality Analysis), to assess equipment failures, identify long-term solutions, and inform strategic maintenance process improvements & critical equipment strategies.
  • Oversee the development and manage downtime reliability reports, including Downtime, Availability, and Utilization metrics, to identify areas for improvement.
  • Lead the development and monitoring of the Maintenance System Optimisation initiative.  
  • Analyse weekly and monthly maintenance cost performance against forecasts, report significant variances, and provide recommendations for strategic improvements to cost structures, resource planning, or engineering initiatives.
  • Develop and implement budget preparation methodology to forecast at least 12 unique categories of maintenance expenditure. Update methodology to respond to evolving requirements by the Finance department and management. Develop and maintain appropriate methodology to monitor monthly budget forecasts, including the development of complex cost reports using SAP data and advanced Excel functionality to manipulate large data sets into user-friendly reports.
  • In conjunction with SCM, maintenance, and processing senior leadership groups, develop 6-monthly shutdown plans, identify parts required, workload, and critical path. Review all shutdown service requisition scope of works (SOW) to ensure quality and alignment with maintenance requirements.
  • Review the technical evaluation prior to submitting to SCM for shutdowns.Address parts-related issues and develop contingency in case parts do not arrive for planned shutdowns.
  • Drive safety initiatives within the engineering and planning teams.
  • Participate in and support maintenance-related incident (ICAM) and safety investigations (SPI, Near miss).
  • Ensure compliance with safety, health, and environmental requirements within the scope of engineering and planning activities.  
  • Liaise/consult with internal stakeholders to identify and execute strategic cost-saving and sustainability initiatives.
  • Liaise with the Supply Chain Management department to resolve issues related to ordering materials, contractors, and receiving parts.  
  • Contribute to the morning Maintenance/Processing meeting by providing updates and insights from the engineering and planning teams.
  • Develop and update weekly RAR reports (Results Action Recommendations), focusing on engineering and planning performance.
  • Maintain the DMS (Document Management System) for the engineering & planning sections, ensuring proper documentation of engineering design documentation, FMECAs, maintenance plans, and related documents.
  • Complete Management of Change (MOC) tasks related to engineering and maintenance planning changes, including technical engineering design reviews.
  • Develop and progress other strategic initiatives such as the Over Maximum Inventory Reduction initiative to reduce maintenance costs as required.
  • Lead the ongoing development of Key Performance Indicators to assess maintenance performance with respect to departmental goals.
  • Identify key business risks and implement appropriate risk mitigation plans.
  • Set personnel KPI’s for direct reports based on the departmental goals for the year. Follow-up with 6-monthly performance reviews measured against achievement.
  • Lead the development of maintenance capital projects, from concept and Project Business Cases (PBCs) to Capital Expenditure Requests (CERs) and securing final project approval.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Ideally candidate will have university major Mechanical or Electrical Engineering degree.
  • And/or a Mechanical or Electrical trade background with post trade tertiary qualifications and at least 10 years’ experience in heavy industry.
  • Leadership experience in ore processing facilities or similar heavy industry including maintenance experience on crushers, grinding mills, flotation circuits and chemical treatment plants.
  • 5 years in a superintendent or similar leadership role.
  • High self-motivation with the ability to lead multidisclinary and multicultural maintenance teams during normal operations and shutdown periods.
  • Ability to provide technical assistances to the work teams when equipment failures occur. 
  • Technical knowledge applicable to process plants and mining in general.
  • Planning and Preventative Maintenance (PM’s) experience.  
  • Best practice procedure compliance across safety and plant operation.
  • Basic finance budgeting/forecasting understanding and experience.
  • Solid computer skills in business software Microsoft Office and experience with CMMS software systems SAP, Ellipse or Pronto).
  • Provide leadership and training to accomplish the company goals and objectives through KPI’s.
  • Asset management process knowledge.
  • Electrical systems understanding.
  • Ensure compliance to safety procedures and lead by example.
  • Review downtime events and assign actions where required.
  • Review weekly planning KPI’s unplanned work against planned work, Schedule completion, Rework, work order time confirmations.
  • Ensure contracts compliance against agreements.
  • Warehouse spares, ANSI system knowledge, critical spares, inventory awareness.
  • Failure Modes Effects Criticality Analysis (FMECA) experience, to understand critical spares to be held in stock.
  • Statutory inspections and legislative requirements for Vietnam knowledge. example, Pressure vessel, lifting equipment knowledge.
  • Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Incident Cause Analysis Method (ICAM) experience.
